Since its inception in 1881 the Botany Section has encouraged interest and study in all plants and plant communities, especially those in western New York State. Mutual interests with the Entomology Section resulted in their joining in 1972.

Indoor meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, from September to May, at 7:30 p.m.in the homes of members. Programs include illustrated talks on subjects such as plant taxonomy and physiology, ecology, entomology, and the environment.

Field trips are scheduled throughout the year to acquaint the members with the wild and cultivated flora and insects in the area.

The section maintains the Herbarium of the Rochester Academy of Science and holds periodic workshops on the collection.
